SurfZone Balance Trainer Balance Board

SurfZone Balance Trainer – Made For Surfers

Are you looking fitness challenge?  The SurfZone Balance Trainer is definitely your answer.  Most balance boards will give you an amazing core workout, but the SurfZone Balance Trainer takes it a step further with it’s patented non-resilient balance hubs.  Each of the SurfZone’s patented hemispherical hubs require you to balance in all directions at once.   In doing so, you get a wicked core workout.

SurfZone is located in what is known as the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  The Outer Banks is a hub for East Coast surfers and beach goers alike, so it comes as no surprise that someone would eventually setup shop there and start selling balance boards.  SurfZone has been a family run business since 2008 and moved to the Outer Banks in 2010.

Beyond the mere mechanics of the board, the SurfZone Balance Trainer is a work of art.  Each piece is hand crafted right here in the USA using beautiful SurfZone Balance Boardgreen-certified bamboo, which means it not only looks great, but is also very Eco-friendly.  Each hub is made from marine grade ABS and HDPE (high density poly ethylene) and contains 40% recycled material.  Each board is topped off with a certified Low-Tox finish.

When our SurfZone Balance Trainer arrived, it also came with a bar of board wax (a SurfZone recipe of beeswax and soy).  This makes the SurfZone balance boards a little more unique.  Most boards from other manufactures come prepackaged with their version of grip already applied.  In order to get good grip on the SurfZone boards, you will need to wax them, just like most surfers do with their boards.  Once applied, you can go barefoot and not worry about slippage.

The SurfZone Balance Trainer was designed for the Surfing crowd with it’s long profile and maneuverability.  It’s not designed as a trick board, although I am quite certain people will find a way to do really radical things with it.  We found that the SurfZone Balance Trainer is one of the hardest balance boards to master thus far.  The Expert hub really makes you Work For It every time you’re on.  You can just feel your core engage and you know you’re getting one heck of a balance training workout.

Since the SurfZone board is a little longer than most (about 4 feet), you may think that it takes up more space while using it.  Surprisingly it takes up less space simply because it doesn’t use a roller, which will often almost double a board’s footprint when rolling back and forth.  When rolling side to to side there is roughly 5 1/2 inches of play and almost as much forward and aft.

We found that initially you may want to use the Balance Trainer on carpet, making it a little easier to balance on.  It can be a little intimidating at first, but once you figure out the boards mechanics it becomes a lot of fun.  After you get the hang of it, you can move on to harder surfaces.   If you want to use the trainer on grass, we recommend using a mat or temporary surface like a small sheet of plywood.

The Lowdown

  • The board retails for $199, which puts it at the higher end of the spectrum for balance boards.  Given the quality and craftsmanship of each board, you’re getting a great deal in our opinion.  I mean it simply looks great just sitting against a wall or on the floor.
  • The board is a single piece of equipment, so you don’t have to lug a roller or anything else.
  • You can order the board in either SurfZone Expert or SurfZone Beginner.  The beginner’s hub (somewhat squashed) and is a little easier to balance on.
  • The board’s dimensions are roughly 47 x 11 1/4 (inches a the widest section)
  • When the board is tipped (one end sitting on the ground, the other up), there is about 9 1/2 inches of clearance at the top.
  • When the board is balanced on the hub there is about 5 1/2 inches of clearance.
  • The hub is roughly 10 inches in diameter.

If you’re looking for a fantastic core workout balance board, you will not regret the SurfZone Balance Trainer.
