Specialized S-Works Road Shoe Review

Specialized S-Works Road ShoeI recently got to try out the new Specialized S-Works Road Shoe (http://www.specialized.com) and WOW.  These shoes are some of my favorite road shoes.  The shoes are everything one would want in a road shoe and more, from fit to function, these shoe do it all.

The all new Specialized S-Works Road Shoe features Specialized’s Body Geometry (BG) technology.  The BG technology High Performance Footbed is designed to reduce hot spots and improve knee/foot alignment

The road shoes also come fully equipped with BOA technology and feature not just 1, but 2 new BOA S1-M dials per shoe. The function of the top dial is to lock down your ankle and heel while the lower dial keeps your arch and forefoot in place.  Having 2 dials is fantastic for relieving foot tension during a long cycling sessions and ensures you’ve got the perfect fit throughout the ride.  An additional bonus is the BOA S1-M dials rotate in both directions allowing you to easily loosen and tighten while cycling.

The Specialized S-Works Road Shoe also come with a replaceable heel tread with internally recessed screws for security.  The shoes have an ultra vented tongue for unobstructed breathability and a vent in the bottom to allow for even more air flow.

I found that adding my speedplay cleats to the shoes was an extremely easy process.  Since the shoes come with a 3-bolt cleat pattern, the shoes will fit Shimano SPD-SL, Look, Time and Speedplay without any issue.

The BOA technology is as good as it gets and really allows for an amazing fit.  The only drawback, if you call it that, is the fact that the shoes are a little harder to get into than traditional road shoes.

Once in the shoes, the fit is amazing.  So good is the fit, your feet feel almost like an extension of the pedals themselves.  It certainly allows you to push more watts without losing power.  If you are looking to gain an edge over your competition, these shoes will certainly do it.

Climbing and standing in the Specialized S-Works Road Shoes feels completely natural and the carbon soles do everything you would expect, well except they might do it even better.

Now the only real drawback to these shoes is price.  At a retail value of $350, the shoes are at least $50-100 more than many of it’s competitors, but hey, if you want the best, sometimes you have to pay for it.

I found the shoes run about 1/2 small.  I typically wear a 43 and opted for the 43.5, which is actually another bonus for these shoes, since they come in half sizes.  If you have a wide foot you might try the wider EE version.  The shoes come in a variety of colors from all white, all black, combo white/black, white/red, to a yellowish version.
