Platypus Bottles And Storage

The Platypus Bottles and Storage isn’t that cute furry egg laying, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal creature.  Rather it’s a bottle and storage system designed to be light weight and packable.

The Platypus bottle and storage collection consists of the SoftBottle, Platy Bottle, Plus Bottle and Platy Water tank.  The Platypus Brand and Platypus product line is part of Cascade Designs family of brands and products, who also feature the very cool MSR (Mountain Safety Research) brand.

The SoftBottle comes in a variety of colors, ours is a nice shade of red.  The bottles are designed as an easy way to carry liquid when full and easy way to store them when empty.  Good examples are for camping, backpacking or travel when storage is limited.

The bottle is made from Taste-free, BPA-free materials and the food-grade liner has a rugged exterior, but is still pliable and looks durable.

plusBottleThe Plus Bottle currently comes in clear and is essentially the same as the SoftBottle with the addition of a handle on the side.  We took the bottle out on a camping trip this past weekend and found it super useful for carrying water.  We also found it a little easier to pack than a traditional bottle, since you could squeeze it in areas that a normal bottle wouldn’t be able to fit into.  Once it was emptied out, it took almost no space and as a result was able to be placed in a side pocket that wouldn’t have had room before.

We found the addition of the handle makes this a great bottle option to have for tubing, since you can attach a carabiner or rope through it.

Overall Impression

There are 2 main drawbacks to the Plus Bottle and the SoftBottle.  First neither have insulation for keeping liquids cool or hot. Second, because the bottle openings are small, unless you’re strictly going to fill them with water, they are going to be hard to clean if the contents spoil.

On a positive note, the bottles performed flawlessly, but give you more packing options over a typical bottle.  The bottles are stable both lying flat and upright.

If going light is the main objective, they certainly deliver and can be packed without or without liquid until you reach your destination.  Combining these with a water filtration system, like the Platypus Gravity Works, would probably be the ultimate setup.   If you are into camping like we are, the Platypus bottles are definitely something to check out.
