Important
Skating can be a dangerous sport and the most common injury is scraped knees and possibly broken wrists. Whenever I skated I always wore wrist guards and in races helmets were required.  My advice is to definitely get a set of good wrist guards (Usually around $20-$30) and a helmet. Knee-pads and elbow-pads are optional and might be good choices for a beginner. Having that extra padding will certainly help when learning how to skate.
